Miu Miu Ballet Flats: The Shoe of the Season

Miu Miu dominated the fall/winter 2022 runway.

Miu Miu dominated the fall/winter 2022 runway with their angelic ballet slipper, and it’s quickly becoming the shoe of the fall. According to Nylon’s Fall 2022 Fashion Trend Predictions, this fall was predicted to trend tactical wear. The shoe of the season was projected to be that of a hiking boot, the Salomon XT-6. Although this flat is not what trends predicted, Miu Miu still managed to establish their place in this season’s attire. But with the resurface of the shoe, how did Miu Miu manage to retrend this flat?

The popularity of ballet flats first originated in 1947 when the French actress Brigitte Bardot wore a pair designed by Rose Repetto’s company. Her upbringing as a ballerina led her to seek a shoe that could be as flexible and comfortable as her ballet shoes. Rose Repetto, the founder of the Repetto Ballet Shoe Company, took on the challenge of crafting ballet apparel by developing high-quality handmade shoes that conformed to the feet, setting them apart from competing footwear. After Repetto’s shoes became desired by ballerinas everywhere, Bardot hired Repetto to create an exclusive pair for everyday wear. The flats have cycled in and out of popularity ever since.

In the 2010s, ballet flats started to reappear in fashion, and we began to see them everywhere. Icons like Karlie Kloss were spotted wearing their own version of the shoe, inspiring many individuals into buying ballet flats. At this time, the flat was worn as workwear. They were styled alongside blazers and business casual dresses. In the spring/summer of 2016, Miu Miu’s first ballet-inspired pump officially made an appearance in the spotlight. The 2016 version had chunky, buckle straps and black and gingham ribbons that laced upward the ankle. The 2016 version followed the silhouette of an actual ballet slipper, while simultaneously differentiating itself; this version was not made for ballet, but for style. The ballet flat was quite popular in the height of the 2010s, however, it was quickly out-trended.

This fall/winter 2022 season, Miu Miu has decided to retrend ballet flats, making them the shoe of the season. Vogue’s Julia Hobbs and singer-songwriter Rosalia also deserve credit for influencing consumers by posting themselves wearing Miu Miu’s ballet flats via Instagram. If you ever longed to feel expensive, unique, or classy, why would you not own a pair? This season’s flats shy away from its 2010s style. They can be paired with classic ballet leg warmers, pastel colors, and satin fabrics, giving them an expensive and classy effect.

Miu Miu seemingly pulled inspiration from ballet aesthetics circulating through TikTok and Instagram. Influencers have been sharing their experience of buying Miu Miu ballet flats such as digital creator Taylor Hage’s Tiktok vlog of purchasing the shoes and Tiktoker @olafflee unboxing the shoes. Check out the retrend of Miu Miu’s ballet flats, the shoe of this fall season.
