Modern Love
When you think of love, you probably think of something from a romantic movie scene. Maybe it is a couple kissing in the rain like in “The Notebook” or dancing in an observatory like in “La La Land”. Love is often portrayed by the media as an unflawed and exaggerated romantic relationship. Whether it is a knight-in-shining-armor troupe, or enemies to lovers, we are flooded with unrealistic expectations and fantasies.
The novel “Modern Love: True Stories of Love, Loss and Redemption” edited by Daniel Jones showcases a compilation of the best short stories submitted to the New York Times “Modern Love” column. With insight from over 40 different authors, readers can see that love and loss stretches across both romantic and platonic relationships, failed first dates, hookups, questionable choices and everything in between.
What I think is so special and valuable about this novel is that it is honest. While some stories start with alcoholism and end in a happy marriage, others begin with a crush on a neighbor and finish with a lesson about self-love. All in all, what is important about each of these stories is that they are not only entertaining, but offer a chance to learn from others’ experiences and perspectives. These stories bring to light the new impacts that technology and hook-up culture has on modern relationships today and is relatable to younger generations.
“Modern Love” is a simple read and perfect for anyone with a busy schedule. You can either binge read the whole novel, or read a single short story on a 10 minute walk to class. All in all, I urge you to purchase this book regardless of what you think your taste may be.
