ALEXSUCKS: From Skating to Sold-Out Shows
Don’t let the name deceive you. From amassing an impressive fanbase to selling out shows, ALEXSUCKS brings high energy and enthusiasm to the skate rock community. Composed of lead vocalist Alex Alvarez, guitarist John Luther, bassist DJ Topgun, and drummer Jonny Ransom, the LA-based quartet is building a name for themselves that soon everyone will know.
On March 7, ALEXSUCKS kicked off their Dance Punch Cry tour with an unforgettable show at the House of Blues in San Diego. Following a sold-out debut show in LA the night before, the band continues to establish their presence in the alternative rock scene, showing everyone they’re here to stay. Before the show, The Look had the opportunity to sit down with the band to talk about their journey, the tour, and the future of ALEXSUCKS. Here’s what they had to say.
The Story Behind ALEXSUCKS
The formation of ALEXSUCKS is a story rooted in spontaneity, shared interests, and most importantly, skateboarding. “Skateboarding and Facebook Marketplace,” the band laughs when asked how they came together. With members coming together from different parts of the U.S., their common ground was skating – though it wasn’t something they ever thought would lead to a full-fledged band. As for the name “ALEXSUCKS,” it came about as a joke. “We never took it too seriously,” they explain. “We never imagined it would actually become our job.”
The Energy Behind Their Performances
When it comes to the band’s energetic stage presence, it’s clear that ALEXSUCKS doesn’t overthink it. When asked how they all feel so comfortable dancing and having fun on stage, lead vocalist and guitarist Alex Alvarez simply replied, “We want our music to make other people feel good. We just dance and have fun. We tend to not take things too seriously and just enjoy the experience.” It’s this carefree, yet high-energy approach that has made ALEXSUCKS stand out. Their live shows are filled with contagious enthusiasm, bringing back the true spirit of rock and roll. You may even find Alex crowd-surfing.
Overcoming Challenges in the Music Industry
Like most bands, ALEXSUCKS has faced challenges in the ever-evolving music industry.
“It’s hard,” they admit. “So many bands get a lot of their attention from social media, but I’m proud to say that we’ve gotten most of our attention from going on so many tours and traveling,” said Alvarez.
The band also celebrates the milestone of having two songs hit Top 40 on Alternative radio – a huge achievement for any band. “We’re trying to dip our feet into the social media world,” they note, acknowledging that while they’re not fully immersed in it, they’re open to trying it out.
The Band's Favorite City to Perform
While the band has traveled to countless cities, they all agree on one place that holds a special place in their hearts: Los Angeles. “We started the band in LA,” they explain. “None of us are from LA, but it means a lot to us. Every time we play LA, it’s a great vibe, amazing energy, and something really special.”
While ALEXSUCKS continues to grow and evolve, LA remains a symbolic home base, where their story first began.
Skating’s Influence on Music
Skateboarding continues to play a major role in the band’s sound and creativity. “Skating impacted our music taste from an early age,” Alvarez explains. “Learning music through skateboarding was how we developed our whole vibe.”
The rebellious spirit of skating and the culture that surrounds it have influenced everything from their musical style to their approach to life and performance.
Musical Inspirations
When it comes to their musical influences, ALEXSUCKS is heavily inspired by The Clash and disco beats. The classic punk energy combined with the infectious rhythm of disco is an eclectic mix that is reflected in the band’s authentic and unique sound.
Fan Favorites and Pre-Show Rituals
As for their favorite songs to perform, ALEXSUCKS points to “Fish Don’t Fly”, which, while not yet released, has quickly become a fan favorite. “It’s just super fun” they all agree. Despite their carefree attitude on stage, the band admits to a bit of pre-show anxiety. “Just freak out a little bit,” was the response when asked if they had any pre-show rituals.
Advice for Aspiring Artists
For those who dream of making it in the music industry, ALEXSUCKS has some straightforward advice: “Put your head down, enjoy making music, and enjoy playing your music,” says Alvarez. “Do that as much as you can, and when you look up, you’ll be surprised at how far you’ve come. Good things come when you stay focused.” This advice is a reflection of the band’s own journey – one that’s been marked by passion, perseverance, and the pure joy of making music.
Looking Ahead: New Music on the Horizon
As they continue their Dance Punch Cry tour, ALEXSUCKS isn’t slowing down. “We’re working on our biggest album yet,” they reveal, hinting at what’s next for the band. Fans can expect big things in the future, as they continue to carve out their place in the alternative rock scene.
