Shop ‘til You Drop at Women-Owned Businesses
March is Women’s History Month and last week women around the world celebrated International Women’s Day. As we take time to honor female trailblazers in history, there is an opportunity for insight into the current socio-political landscape of women’s rights. While there is much to celebrate in terms of female achievements, still much progress can be made. Social change comes from actions done by individuals like us; we can make a difference by educating ourselves, advocating, taking action… and shopping!
Let’s make a difference by supporting these amazing women-owned and run businesses located here in San Diego.
Mujeres Brew House
Mujeres Brew House marks San Diego’s first Latina-owned brewery. Co-founders Estela Davila and Carmen Favela have created the spot for your weekend fun by offering a variety of events. There is Loteria Night, Michelada Bar, Tacos Tuesdays with food vendors and Sunday socials every week.
They also host multiple farmer's markets with vendors, food, artists, and live music. Local female DJs have found a home here with multiple being featured every month. While it is a brewery it is also family and pet-friendly, so anyone is welcomed.
Azucar
Vivian Hernandez-Jackson combines her classical French training, from Le Cordon Bleu. With her Cuban heritage at Azucar, this restaurant is the only place you’ll find these truly unique pastries. If you’re craving something sweet, Azucar has must-try gems like guava pastry, flan de queso, Divina, raspberry passion fruit scones and so much more.
Not much of a sweet tooth? No problem! Cuban pastries have a savory side: try ham croquetas and papas rellenas, cheese rolls, meat pies, or a cubano sandwich. And don’t forget your cafe cubano.
Mujer Divina and Tuétano Taqueria
Both owned by Chef Priscilla Curiel and offering her slow-braised mother watering birria, Tuétano Taqueria also features roasted bone marrow, tacos, tortas, quesadillas, and other mouth-watering dishes. Mujer Divina focuses on Tijuana-style burritos and coffee made with organic beans from Chiapas, Mexico.
The homemade burritos are available in birria, machaca ranchera, chorizo con papa, bean and cheese, and campechano. Try their unique coffee drinks like cafe de olla, cajeta latte, or a mexican mocha. Accompany your latte with weekly specialty desserts from local and home bakers.
Artelexia
This shop was once a farmers market stand now a vibrant storefront in North Park. Artelexia specializes in Mexican home decor, art, and gourmet food. Owner Elexia de la Parra's mission is “sharing the vibrant culture of Mexico with the world.” The store is full of charm, color, and culture.
Casa Xovi
Barrio Logan is home to many interesting and creative businesses including this gift shop owned by Xochitl Villareal. You can find concha-shaped everything, hand-painted cactus paper mache hearts, jewelry, and apparel.
Hola Swim
Aida Soria and Syncletica Maestas founded this swimsuit company with their collection being entirely designed and produced in San Diego. Also located in Barrio Logan, each piece is inspired by their Latinx roots. If you’re looking for swimsuits with “multifunctional versity in mind,” this is perfect for you.
