Approaching August: The Look’s Guide for all Things College

By Katie Blais

Hey there, we’re so happy you’re here! Whether you’re an incoming freshman or returning college student, here at The Look we know that college can be an overwhelming and stressful transition leaving many feeling uneasy about what to expect. From navigating new friendships, classes and campus, to perfecting your dorm decor and packing list, we’re here to help make college feel a little less scary.

As we approach August, the reality of “back to school” season becomes more and more apparent. While The Look has been enjoying its summer break, thinking about quickly approaching August felt like the perfect time for a summer check in, with what better than a college guide to get us ready for the new year!

What to Expect!

Nerves are normal…

College is a time unlike any other. You will be experiencing so many new things for the first time. If the thought of college is making you nervous, that is totally normal! Just remember that everyone is feeling the same way and that we are all learning together. Soon the nerves will settle to excitement as you cultivate your new college life!

Give it time…

If your first day or week or month wasn’t what you expected, it’s okay! Finding your people takes time. There will always be opportunities for you to meet new people in college, take advantage of them!

Tips & Tricks!

Say Yes…

College is all about getting out of your comfort zone, trying new things, and saying yes! Explore student clubs and organizations, go to dinner with new friends, pick up a hobby or skill you’ve never tried before, and go on the late night sweet treat run! You never know the possibilities that could come from simply saying yes! Oh and of course, join The Look!

Be patient with yourself…

Above all else, give yourself grace! Things will fall into place with time, but don’t be hard on yourself if they’re taking longer than you had hoped. Prioritize your health and wellbeing and do the things that make you happy and bring you peace.

Whether it’s your first year in college or your last, I hope that this college guide finds you well no matter where you are on your college journey. As The Look approaches its fourth year here at SDSU, know that if you are looking for a space to unleash your creativity or to simply meet like minded individuals, we will be here for you, cultivating expression, perspective, and diversity.
