A Bird’s Flight

A piece I wrote when thinking about how much I’ve changed since starting this new chapter called college.

Why does the nest bring us comfort? Why is the thought of leaving it and soaring into the horizon towards an unknown destination so scary? Culturally, leaving the nest is often considered terrifying and sometimes discouraged.

Do people not see the beauty in discovering oneself? Leaving your home is one of life's most rewarding experiences. Yes, it is a scary thought, and no, leaving home does not mean despising our family or where we come from. However, true self-discovery often begins when we venture far away—away from outside influences and the expectations of those who think they know us.

When I was on my own, I was able to truly understand who I am and what I want to contribute to this world. I am in charge of how I am perceived, but before others can form a perception of me, I must first understand myself.

The life values I once held were imposed upon me, and I simply assimilated them. But now, free as a bird, I decide how I see the world and myself. And what a beautiful world it is now that I live as my true self!

So fly on, little bird, soar high, see the world, and be comfortable with the uncomfortable questions. Look inward and discover who you truly are. Those wings are majestic when soul and persona unite.
